Switzerland of Ohio Blessings in a Backpack

Project led by Switzerland of Ohio Local School District

About the project.

The Switzerland of Ohio Local School District Blessings in a Backpack program provides food for 250 children from pre-elementary school to 6th grade across five elementary schools. As a result of the pandemic, a high percentage of the children attending the Switzerland of Ohio School District receive free or reduced lunches while school is in session, but do not have adequate access to food over the weekend.

This program provides food to each school monthly, where it is then placed in the backpack of the recipient before they leave school to maintain respect and discretion.

FAO staff comments.

The Blessings in a Backpack program through the Switzerland of Ohio School District provides food for children across the district’s five elementary schools. This program ensures that children experiencing food insecurity over weekends are able to access nutritious items and care, without sacrificing their dignity or pride to do so.
