A Day in the Ring

Project led by Vinton County 4-H Advisory Council

About the project.

A Day in the Ring program provides opportunity for youth and adults with developmental disabilities to experience “A Day in the Ring” with a livestock animal at the Vinton County Junior Fair. Experienced 4-H and FFA members will be partnered with the participant, and they will spend some time before the show learning about and getting to know the livestock animal they have chosen to show. Members would accompany the participant into the ring as they “show” their animal off to a judge.

A Day in the Ring will allow those with disabilities to experience the thrill of showing an animal in the ring. 4-H and FFA members will be able to share their knowledge and experiences as the serve as a mentor to the participants during the event. A Day in the Ring showcases 4-H’s commitment to diversity and inclusion no matter your limitations.

Funding will support promotional materials and outreach to service providers.

FAO staff comments.

Individuals with developmental differences should have the same access to experiences as other individuals. This project not only allows adults and children with developmental differences to have a unique and hands on experience at the fair, it provides those in 4-H the opportunity to connect with community members and share their expertise.
